If you live in the north, fall is the best time to fertilize your lawn. Your grass may be recovering from a hot summer and you want to make sure to strengthen your grass's blades and roots so they can survive the winter and be strong come next spring. Ideally, you should fertilize once around early September and then again around the end of October or beginning of November.
Buying the right fertilizer can be a confusing process for people. Different types of fertilizer are represented by three numbers (ex. 10-20-0). For the September fertilizing, you should use a formula that is high in nitrogen (large first number). This will help the grass recover from the hot summer. As for the later feeding, use a formula that is high in phosphorous (high second number) to help grow strong roots to survive the winter.
